Percussion Week 19

6th Grade

We want to be well rounded percussionists! Please make sure your student is practicing equal amounts of snare drum and marimba. Their practice routine should mirror what we do in class.

Snare

  • Warm up with exercises! Figure out the best tempo for YOU (this might not be the same as our class tempo)
  • Rudiments, play different ones every day, make sure you have them memorized and switch hands
  • MUSIC READING!!! Practice lines from the book and appendixes along with coordination, rudimental, and rhythmic etudes.
    • COUNT, CLAP, AIR-STICK, COUNT WHEN YOU PLAY, TAP YOUR FOOT, PRACTICE WITH A METRONOME :) :) COUNT

Marimba

  • Warm up with technique exercises, Chromatic Claw, Double-stops in C and F
  • Run through your scales/tetrachords. Focus on your problem scales and think about key signatures.
  • Lines from the book – don’t just play them! Challenge yourself and go through the steps on your own
    • SAY THE NOTES
    • FIND THE NOTES
    • TOUCH THE NOTES
    • PLAY THE NOTES — And don’t look down :)
  • *** Speed reader with a metronome and homework packet pages count as practice time!

Please remind your child to play with a metronome! The metronome is perfect, and we strive to come as close to perfect as possible.

7th and 8th Grade

Great job at the snare soiree!

  • Centennial Drumline auditions start Tuesday, January 26th after school. The Snare Packet is the main audition resource. There will be bass drum and tenor addendum passed out in the upcoming weeks but the bulk of the material will be pulled from the snare packet. (LT kids, the packet is a great resource for you to practice as your auditions approach)
  • May 7th – Percussion Concert, Solo & Ensemble
  • Centennial Drumline Camp, June 6-10
